Top News: Solar Power International Workshops and New Leadership
In just over a week, much of the solar industry will be gathering for
Solar Power International in Las Vegas, and we’ll be there with a new
director in tow! Industry veteran Charlie Gay knows his way around our
national labs, which are working across all of our programs on some interesting projects. We’re also excited to highlight a new program that
allows the labs to help some small solar companies. But don’t think the
solar industry is small—new research shows that the grid can already handle increasing amounts of solar with existing operational tools. Learn more in this edition of the SunShot newsletter.

throughout the week. The topics run the gamut – everything from

Introducing SunShot’s New Director
Please join us in welcoming Charlie Gay as the new director of the
SunShot Initiative! Charlie has more than 40 years of experience in the
solar industry, where he started as an engineer designing solar power
system components. He was named to Power Engineering’s list of the 25
most influential people in power generation in the past 25 years—a list
that includes Secretary Moniz. Charlie brings a wealth of senior
management experience and industry knowledge to his new role, having
served as president of Siemens Solar Industries, president and COO of
ASE Americans (formerly Mobil Solar), and chairman of the advisory board
at SunPower. He also served as the director of the National Renewable
Energy Laboratory in the 90s. Welcome to SunShot, Charlie!
Charlie Gay joined the SunShot Initiative in August 2016.
Blog Post: National Lab Support Tackles Solar Challenges
The SunShot National Laboratory Multiyear Partnership (SuNLaMP)
funding program allows national labs to continue addressing the most
critical barriers that remain to achieving our SunShot goals. SuNLaMP
projects are spread across all five of SunShot’s research and
development subprograms, ensuring they have an overarching impact on the
future of solar energy technologies. Read the blog post that highlights some of our most fascinating SuNLaMP projects.
 The
National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, is dedicated
to research, development, commercialization, and deployment of renewable
energy and energy efficiency technologies.

It’s
time to head back to school and if you’re looking for some interesting
new ways to teach the science of solar energy, look no further than the Department of Energy’s Education Toolbox.

Solar Companies Win National Lab Support
The Department of Energy announced 43 small businesses that will participate in the second round of the Small Business Vouchers (SBV)
pilot, two of which focus on solar energy. Hyperlight Energy and
Nishati, Inc. will receive a combined $204,000 in support from national
labs to improve solar energy storage solutions and reduce the costs and
time associated with analyzing and testing solar arrays. Launched last
fall, the SBV pilot connects clean energy small businesses with national
laboratories that provide technical assistance valued up to $300,000. Learn more about the new SBV solar projects.
The Grid Can Handle More Solar
A new report from
the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that part of our
country’s grid could integrate up to 30 percent wind and solar into its
energy load. However, it would likely change how the grid system manages
traditional generation sources. Researchers used high-performance
computing capabilities and innovative visualization tools to model how
the power grid of the eastern United States could operationally
accommodate higher levels of wind and solar photovoltaic generation. Learn more.
Join the SunShot Initiative Team
The SunShot Initiative is hiring multiple federal technology
managers. Technology managers are responsible for managing funding
opportunity announcements, including developing strategies, planning
workshops, and collaborating with contracting officers. Positions are
available for different levels of experience. Apply for the GS-13 position or the GS-14 position. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until December 30.
